This was one of my favorite breakfast foods this past summer. Then fall hit and I switched back to my morning super smoothie. As fate would have it we accidentally left our vitamix at my parent's house back in St. Louis after visiting them for Christmas. This meant no blender for approximately 5 days while we waited for my parents to graciously ship it back to us here in Chicago. So inevitably smoothies were out of the equation, a thought I lamented at first, until I noticed the buckwheat groats, chia and hemp seeds staring down from me in glass jars on the shelf. All of this to say it has been a welcome change to mix up my morning breakfast routine. I have also been enjoying creating different flavors by changing the additional ingredients and types of milk I add to the cereal.
I labeled this a superfood cereal as all of the ingredients are packed full of incredible nutrients. It will also give you loads of energy and keep you full for hours. Buckwheat groats, chia and hemp seeds form the base for this cereal. The additional ingredients are optional and I have provided links to their health benefits, too.
I hope you enjoy this super simple, raw breakfast cereal that can easily be taken on the road by mixing up single servings or even preparing huge batches and storing it in glass jars.
ingredients for 1 serving
2 tablespoons raw buckwheat groats (for a nutty flavor and to make them easier to digest, try toasting them first!)
2 tablespoons chia seeds (black or white)
2 tablespoons raw shelled hemp seeds
1 cup nut milk or other milk of your choice (add more or less depending on the consistency you like your cereal)
pinch of sea salt
optional additions
1 tablespoon goji berries
1 tablespoon raw cacao
1 tablespoon mesquite powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon raw vanilla bean powder
1 tablespoon maple syrup or raw honey
1 teaspoon bea pollen
Add all of the dry ingredients to the bowl and mix. Then add the milk, stir and let sit for a few minutes before savouring each bite!
